One day tour of Lake Nakuru

One day tour of Lake Nakuru

The Great Rift Valley, home to the flamingo decorated Lake Nakuru is one of the breath taking places to visit while on safari in Kenya. The 160 km's drive from Nairobi to Naivasha passes through the most spectacular view of the Great Rift Valley. The road meanders through the forests on the steep escarpments descending into the dry bushed area adorned by volcanic cones and lakes.

Longonot is a dormant volcano 9,102 feet high; its crater is 590 feet deep. The other volcano in the area, Suswa, is extinct. These are the only two "cones" of some note. Visitors enjoy their lunch in the Lake Nakuru National Park at one of the delightful hotels overlooking the Lake Nakuru. The epitome of the extensive tour of the Park is the spectacular scene of the millions of flamingos on the alkaline lake.

The Park is also a haven for  the white or square-lipped rhinoceros and the Rothschild giraffe among other species of mammals and birds. The umbrella acacia and the water loving fever tree, which attracts the malaria causing mosquito hence its name, beautify the Park providing a scrumptious diet for the giraffes.

Visitors enjoy the magnificent view of watching a wide array of animals grazing in the grassland. The lion, leopard, and cheetah are also a sight to behold in this Park which is a sanctuary for almost 450 bird species. Visitors stop for tea on their way back at Lake Naivasha and possibly another stop at the Italian Chapel.
